Artist Statement

In her 19th solo exhibition entitled Through Colour and Shape, Melbourne-based artist Sheena Mathieson presents a vibrant array of works on paper, wood and steel.

Sheena explores the world around us through shape, form and colour; limiting her palette to yellows, reds, blues and white. Combining intuition, experimentation and different surfaces, she produces a layered, evocative and colourful visual narrative.

Sheena’s works on paper are completely unique, using unconventional techniques to create a spontaneity and vibrancy of the here and now. The figures revealed are her reinterpretation of the naked female form from 19th and 20th century paintings, casting a contemporary, female view of the feminine form as a symbol of beauty and joie de vivre. Text adds playful references to engage the viewer.

The shimmering wood panel series has been produced with conte pastel, using a rotating, slightly disguised feminine motif, refined further with polished carnauba wax.

Steel sculptural cylinders derive from Sheena’s figurative works; with printmaking and collage generating three dimensional artworks with her signature pattern and colour.

There is something of the researcher/scientist in how Sheena creates, as she explores the process of mark and printmaking, developing tangential techniques. Sheena enjoys the unexpected – challenging the medium, and producing works which are joyous, playful, colourful and expertly executed.
