Not All Who Wander Are Lost
8 - 31 May 2014
Driving long distances regularly seems to be quite a feature in my life at present. I am on the road for many reasons; education, children, sports, and extended family to name a few. Travel is constant, almost as if I am floating and wandering between places, though I am not lost. This is a chapter in my life, part of the journey. One might even be so bold as to describe it as wandering with purpose. The many hours on the road or in the air allow me the luxury of time to observe, time to dream and time to create.
Much of my inspiration is drawn from the natural environment that surrounds me in the arid region of far North South Australia. The colours, shapes and textures are abundant and ever changing, providing a new perspective each time I delve. With each observation a new element or insight is discovered or uncovered from within the midst of that which is familiar.
I am fascinated by colour, texture and light. When creating, I am drawn to materials that enable me to interpret, capture and communicate the things around me that I see.
Uncomplicated expressions of the elements that I observe are key to my practice. I study subjects closely, dissect the components, marvel at the complexity of their natural construction and composition, then set about recreating them as an idea, image or expression.
I make use of the rich resources copper, gold and silver; mined at Olympic Dam in close proximity to my home. I feature these materials regularly in my work, not only for their practical and aesthetic qualities but also as a means of utilising local products.
