This weeks Exhibition Highlights of the week is by Penny Rushton, Interior Designer for Quadrant Design Architects.
I have chosen this painting as this week’s work of the week, for its rich palette and intricate forms. The canvas seemingly presents as two separate works, the yin and yang of form and colour that are referenced on either side, like the pages of an open book. The ‘boundary’ of sides is reinforced by the abrupt end to the elements of each page.
Perhaps my favourite aspect is the slightly iridescent sheen to the surface layer of paint, applied across both sides of the canvas. This layer’s sheen has the interesting effect of reflecting direct light, and subtly muting the intensity of pigments in low light- though this only serves to enhance the surrounding pigments, almost giving the illusion of an inner glow to the painting.
The exhibition is current until Saturday 5 July 2014
