22. Sally DARLISON - Firenze, hand dyed silk, photos maps, machine stitch, frame size: 52 x 52 cm, $ 735
Penny says: Firenze is such a beautiful piece. A collage detailing significant areas of the landscape, with obvious landmarks nestled among natural scenes of rolling hills. A flowing river carries the eye across the work, and spills over the traditional square proportions of an artwork. The nature of silk gives an ephemeral quality to the work, as it appears to hover slightly and thereby casting soft shadows across the board to which it is mounted.
Sally’s layering technique adds dimension and intrigue. Only as one stands before this work can they can fully appreciate the level of detail that is revealed in the tiny stitches illustrating surface patterns, and the photo and map snippets that give further reference to the origin of inspiration.

These pins are a depiction of the actual ‘Poached Egg Daisy’ that flowers in the spring after good autumn rains and a dry summer, in Rachel’s home town in South Australia. Rachel’s work is evidently inspired by the things she sees in her Australian travels, but I love this piece (pins sold separately) for its delicacy and perfection,-the irregularities of each- as each flower might differ slightly from the next.
The material successfully transforms a common daisy into a delicate piece of jewellery, sculpted from Sterling Silver and 9 carat yellow gold.
I can just imagine how a small cluster of 2-3 of these pins worn on the breast of a soft cardigan or coat would catch the light and bring life to any outfit, but I love them so much I would admire them equally if they were out on display in my home.
