Exhibition Focus: Gina Miller

Exhibition Focus: Gina Miller (nos 84 - 95)

"I want my work to be expressive, spontaneous and experimental, even though I may start with a realistic picture in my mind. I love using a variety of materials and media: paint, inks, crayons & collage papers. My first marks are quite accidental brush strokes without conscious thinking or planning in the realm of the sub- conscious mark making. The ongoing dialogue with the painting begins once I start to overlay the various mixed media, then the composition unfolds.  I like using bold contrasting colours and I experiment with textures hoping to pull the viewer into the emotion of the painting through movement, rhythm and colour.  The painting is finished when it radiates energy and intensity. My paintings are of my inner psyche and come to me like dreams."

The exhibition is open until December 17.

Exhibition Focus: Tony Jackson (nos 70 - 73).

"Colour, patterns, textures & movement are at the core of all my memories. As we move through time & live our lives, elements & particles of where we have been & what we once were travel with us as our ‘dark matter’- that invisible but vital force that gives us our layers. I have expressed this in a mildly erotic manner to stir passion & memories in the viewer – the physical and emotional entwine with time & our life’s path creating a world that is uniquely us. These works continue my exploration of life, death and renewal, and here I express my interpretation in the abstract and surreal."

The exhibition is open until December 17.

Exhibition Focus: Aldo Bellemo (nos 1 - 9)

We are pleased to present two new paintings and one new limited edition print by Aldo Bellemo (nos 1-2 and 9). The artist says about his works: "My adopted city of Melbourne, where I have lived for over fifty years, is evolving not only demographically but also physically. New buildings are erected; old buildings are demolished; some are iconic and have a story to tell. That's where I come in to show that story and give some sense to that landscape. I work from sketches done in situ, photographs, and preliminary studies. I research the significance of the buildings and how they are placed in their immediate surroundings; and then I place a solitary figure to give a sense of place. These figures are neither bitter nor ironic. Instead they are comfortable in their place. The city of Melbourne will be my inspiration for many years to come."

The exhibition is open until December 17.

"New York, a place that has either memories or familiarity for many of us. A place that has been photographed, filmed, visited and dreamed about by so many. My work is made up of a combination of images that depict the New York of my memories. Slightly muddled buildings, water towers, fire hydrants, fire escapes, towers and taxis -  all part of the NY experience."

The exhibition is open until December 17.

Exhibition Highlight of the Week: Focus on Gary Miles

Gary MILES, "Sentinel Outlook" (no.18, oil on linen, 110 x 112 cm, $7,500)

The esteemed Australian painter Gary Miles joined Phil Henshall and Graeme Myrteza on the tour of Arkaroola. His paintings demonstrate yet another artistic approach and unique interpretation of the South Australian outback wilderness. Miles’s paintings, such as “Sentinel Outlook”, bear an unmistakeable influence of such giants of Australian landscape as John Olsen and Fred Williams. Vivid patches of greens and ochres convey the dominant colour palette of the local landscape. The rapid brushwork and the sinuous lines imbue the painting with movement and energy and add to the sensation of an upward spiralling surge.

The exhibition is current until November 12.

Exhibition Highlight of the Week: Focus on Graeme Myrteza

Graeme MYRTEZA, "Broken Dreams" (no. 15, oil on canvas, 60 x 150 cm, $2,800)

Graeme Myrteza’s landscape paintings are distinguished by their vibrant colour palette and lusciously textured surfaces. They convey the atmospheric clarity of evanescent vistas, the contrasting effects of sunlight and shadows, as well as the rugged terrain of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. “Broken Dreams” is one of the very few paintings to feature vestiges of human presence. The romantic ruins of the crumbling homestead are juxtaposed against the limitless expanse of the mountainous landscape meditating on the transience of human existence and the permanence of nature.

The exhibition is current until November 12.
