These two works show how the artist is exploring the one subject at various times of day to catch the subtle changes in the light and how this can create different moods for the works. There is a strong sense of place and time. The different qualities in the light and colours of nature depict the strength or gentleness of the scene painted. Many artists explore a ‘theme’ along these lines and Donald Ramsay studies his subject in great detail and with a deep understanding of both the scene and of light at different times of day. Donald Ramsay the coast beyond will be closing this Saturday 21 November at 4.00pm. This week we have selected Donald Ramsay’s ‘Nocturne 1’ from his current exhibition the coast beyond as this beautiful painting continues the artist’s connection to the West Coast of Victoria and his deep love of the ocean and this part of the world.
This work captures that time, just before nightfall, when the colours of the day are fading yet intensified, creating a moody yet quiet time of day. There is an interesting dynamic between the gentleness of the waves with the distant deep water beyond against the movement in the clouds above. All the subtle last remnants of colour from the sunset are here, reflected in the sea and sky, and the smooth texture of the brush strokes in the painting add to the overall feeling of peacefulness. Donald Ramsay No3 ‘Nocturne 1’ oil on linen, 150 x 150cm $5,500 Donald Ramsay the coast beyond is showing at the gallery until 21st November.
