Exhibition Highlights of the Week: Basketmakers of Victoria

15/10/2014

To continue the theme of our last “Exhibition Highlights of the Week” post, the diversity of approaches to basket making in our current exhibition “Natural on Knot” is truly astonishing.  Among the most popular materials which has inspired artists in the exhibition is a humble gourd. Maureen King in “Shades of Miss Fisher” (no 42, $160) ingeniously added to the gourd an upright collar and a mother-of-pearl pendant, evoking all the Art Deco glamour and elegance of the beloved TV detective. Cordelyne also found favour as a preferred material with many artists in the exhibition. Diana Pierce’s bold inclusion of upright spikes at the top rim and colourful leaves just above the base of her piece transforms a humble cylindrical basket into a truly exotic and tribal “Totem” (no 52, $150). One of the main philosophies of the Basketmakers of Victoria is to use only found and recycled objects. Joan Leeder most creatively adapted brightly coloured fabrics and discarded window sash cords to create a suite of three vessels – a vase, a bowl, and a plate – in the array of most deliciously mouth-watering colours, which the artist appropriately named “Citrus Gelati” (no 44, $80).

All works in the exhibition are for sale. The exhibition is current until Saturday, 25 October 2014. Visit us during gallery hours or view the exhibition online 24/7 at http://www.quadrantgallery.com.au/basketmakers-of-victoria-exhibition-2014.html

The Basketmakers of Victoria : Works of the Week

10/10/2014

As the Basketmakers of Victoria are such a diverse and talented group of people Quadrant Gallery has decided to feature three works for attention on our blog this week.

The works are all from our current exhibition Natural or knot by the Basketmakers of Victoria, the exhibition will be on display until 25th October.

Picture
Work No.12 Feathers and Fanfare by Colleen Bright.

This work has a very tribal feel, the artist has used fruit tree pruning, found objects, wood and bales of twine to create a tall ‘teepee’ shape which is open part of the way to reveal hanging ‘treasures’ inside.

This is a strong work which commands attention, making it fascinating to view from afar and draws you in for closer inspection.

Work No.23   A Touch of Autumn by Margaret Donald.

The artist has used dyed raffia, paper ribbon, Watsonia and linen thread to create a joyful little vessel made using traditional coiled work. The colours of aubergine and green evoke Autumnal tones beautifully and a touch of Lurex in the threads adds a hint of glitz.

Work No.17 Tangled Knot by Jeanette Carter.

This wall piece uses a combination of wire, Cordyline and seagrass to create a loose flower like shape and takes basketry away from its traditional format. The work offers an alternative type of artwork to hang on the wall. Although fragile in appearance, this work is cleverly designed to hold its focus and shape and casts wonderful shadows in the right light.

The exhibition is current until 25 October 2014.
