Barbara BATEMAN, "Colourful Sanctuary" (no 3, oil on linen, 122 x 152 cm, $3,200). Colourful Sanctuary is just one of the works in Barbara Bateman’s current exhibition, Beyond Knowing, which was inspired by the Otway Ranges, where the artist has a studio. The vibrant composition is anchored by the three pillar-like tree trunks which rise majestically from the luscious forest floor. The dappled sunlight tints the trembling ferns in a myriad of blues, greens, and purples, which convey the moist, cool environment of the seaside forest. The pink and golden sunrays that pierce the thick shrubbery heighten the overall palette of the painting and add a sense of illusory depth to the composition. The exhibition is current until Aug 19.
