![]() Phil Henshall’s exhibition ‘Space. Time. Aspectivism.’ Not AB’s Shoalhaven, Oil on canvas, Width: 183 cm Height: 123 cm $2000 This work so perfectly captures the depth and richness of a landscape in the softest hazy light that one might imagine would be the perspective of a bird, soaring overhead early morning. The river snakes its way through the valleys in the centre of the painting, punctuating the deep blue/green mass of lush hills. Fertile ground spanning up from the river transforms the landscape from the deepest blues through to pale greens at the middle green at the top of high peaks. This layering of colour adds depth and the truthful nature of this layering encourages me to reflect on natural landscapes I have wandered through- having grown up in Tasmania I have certainly seen some of the best, but if only I had seen them from above! The way Henshall has framed this scene encourages ones eye to follow the winding river, trailing the valleys and deep/ dark crevices of the landscape until it emerges, into the clear open sea beyond. Though only a small glimpse is offered, I am drawn to move ahead of the image into the serenity beyond. Space, Time. Aspectivism® Closing This Week On view until Saturday, 30 August 2014 Preview the Exhibition Online http://www.quadrantgallery.com.au/phil-henshall.html This week’s work of the week from Phil Henshall’s exhibition ‘Space. Time. Aspectivism.’ is Burrup (no 13, oil on canvas, 153 x 103cm, $1500.00).
This work depicts a view of the Burrup Peninsula, Western Australia, employing the artist’s distinctive semi-aerial perspective. The strong reds and burnt ochres of the rock formations which essentially divide the painting into four sections contrast with the greens of the plains between and the deeper stylized greens of the trees dotted throughout. There is a trickle of white and turquoise running directly up through the centre of the work representing the drying, salted riverbed giving some visual relief from the deep rich reds which dominate the work. The clear blue of the sky and sea at the top of the painting balance out the textured detail of the rock formations at the bottom of the work. This painting is both realistic and abstract at the same time. There is a strong sense of distance and perspective giving a view to a distance shoreline. However, the use of the paint and treatment of the brushstrokes abstracts the rock formations and trees which prevents the work from becoming a traditional landscape and ensures a contemporary feel. The exhibition is current until 30 August 2014: http://www.quadrantgallery.com.au/phil-henshall.html Phil Henshall, whose exhibition 'Space, Time. Aspectivism' is currently on view, will be in attendance at the gallery this Saturday, 23 August 2014, from 12pm to 2pm.

SUMMER II APPLICATION FORM SUMMER II - TERMS AND CONDITIONS Exhibition Highlight of the Week: Phil Henshall’s “Kilcunda Cove” (no 11, oil on canvas, 123 x 123 cm, $1,500).
Phil Henshall’s Kilcunda Cove is a painting of contrasts. The monolithic bluff, weathered by time and ornamented by rhythmically striated bands of ancient soil deposits, is carried out in smooth, flowing brushstrokes and thick layers of pigment to convey its immovable solidity. It recedes into the lower left foreground of the painting to reveal an unexpected glimpse of a secluded cove, with luscious vegetation, hidden caves, cascading waterfalls, and incoming waves, which hungrily consume the foreshore boulders. The background landscape is carried out in a more effervescent and energetic painting technique to convey the movement of air through dense shrubbery and the surge of rushing water; the complex atmospheric effects are expressed through the highlights of greens, blues, and yellows. The landscape draws the viewer in by its fresh and luscious colour palette; the idyllic solitude of the cove; and the mysterious crevices of its cave formations. The indeterminate vantage point, illustrative of Phil Henshall’s aspectivism, produces a vertiginous, destabilising effect and further plunges the viewer headlong into the depths of the painting. The exhibition is current until 30 August 2014: http://www.quadrantgallery.com.au/phil-henshall.html Our new exhibition of recent paintings by Phil Henshall "Space, Time. Aspectivism" is starting this Thursday. Please join us on Saturday, 9 August, 12-2pm, for drinks with the artist and the official opening of the show.
