UP NEXT...Sculpting with Ross Miller
Over 5 sessions in Sept - Oct learn the process of producing a figurative sculpture. Suitable for all skill levels, Ross Miller will take you through the production of a figurative sculpture from ciment fondu, in the studio of Seniors Artist Supplies. Session 1 will focus on the armature construction of a standing figure, from a live model. Session 2 - 3 will focus, develop and refine modelling of the figurative form. Session 4 will involve splitting the mould and casting with ciment fondu. Session 5 you will remove the waste from the mould and finish the sculpture ready for you to take home. Tomorrow, Saturday 23 July, is the last day of William Ferguson's exhibition 'My Dream Time and Spirit of Place'.
This wonderful exhibition has been well received and enjoyed by many, so if you haven't seen these joyous works yet, you still have until 4.00 pm tomorrow. The perfect way to brighten anyone's spirits on a cold winter day! Closing this week:
"My Dream Time and Spirit of Place", an exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by William Ferguson. On view at the gallery until Saturday, 23 July. View the exhibition at our website, http://www.quadrantgallery.com.au/william-ferguson---2016.html. This week’s Work of the Week is #31 Sugar Gum Image, (acrylic on canvas H150 x W110cm $3500) from William Ferguson’s exhibition ‘My Dream Time and Spirit of Place currently at the gallery.
This is a more subtle rendition of Ferguson’s work, but no less striking. This painting is more muted than his usual vibrant mix of intense colour. However it still possesses strong contrast between the main area of ochres and sand tones and the just the right balance of the stronger blue with touches of mauve shapes, symbolizing what look to be bodies of water in an arid landscape from an aerial perspective. Punctuation is added with touches of burnt orange, black, red and pale blue which help lift the painting. The mark making and layers, within the work, tells the story, as it does in all of Ferguson’s works. What I enjoy about this work is its sophistication of design without being slick; it’s a work of which one would not tire. ‘My Dream Time and Spirit of Place’ will be closing this Saturday, It is well worth a visit to see these wonderful paintings. #33 ‘Jiritju Ceremony’, acrylic on canvas 96 x 120cm $3000.00 I love the energy and happiness of this painting; it is a celebration of colour and movement. The overall composition has the vibrancy of a ceremony of place and there is intrinsic meaning within the work. Ferguson’s works are based around actual places of tribal significance, (most often in the Northern Territory or Arnhem Land) as he has been strongly influenced, throughout his career, by the relationship of the Aboriginal people to the land and its spiritual significance. However, his symbolic shapes and mark making, while referencing actual landmarks, are purely his own which he combines with a masterful knowledge of the workings of colour and shape. All of Ferguson’s works have a spiritual quality, and this painting expresses the joyfulness of Life and Place. Although this is an abstract work, it definitely has a story to tell for the viewer to discover and experience.
