Picture
Sally Darlison, Croatian Fishing (no 33, mixed media, $735)

Like many other works in this imaginative and vibrant exhibition, Sally Darlison’s Croatian Fishing (no 33, mixed media, $735) deserves to be seen up close, for it is only when you are standing in front of the work that wonderful textural complexities reveal themselves. Sally imaginatively utilises diverse media, including hand-dyed silk organza, collaged photos, fragments of maps, and a combination of machine and hand-stitching to convey her experience of the Mediterranean coastline, and particularly of Croatia. The tonal depths of the azure, turquoise, and blue organza perfectly interpret the gentle shimmer of the sea waves. The image of the sun-drenched boat idealises the life of the local fishermen. The intricately collaged maps narrate the artist’s love of inveterate travel. The seemingly disparate elements within the picture combine to create an aesthetically pleasing artwork, which transports the viewer into the Mediterranean idyll.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014.

Rachel Young, Sturt’s Pea (no 111, enamel on copper, $375)

If Sally Darlison’s exhibition transports you to the distant lands, Rachel Young immerses you in the local experience. Like most other works in her exhibition, Sturt’s Pea (no 111, enamel on copper, $375) is literally the product of the artist’s environment. The inimitable shape of the black bulbous centre and the sharp outlines of the distinctive sang-du-boeuf petals of this native and iconic Australian plant gradually emerge within the abstracted design of the composition. The flower has a special significance for this South-Australian artist, as it has been adopted as the state’s floral emblem since 1961. All materials for this artwork (and just like all other works in the exhibition), including copper, gold leaf, and enamel, were also sourced locally within the proximity of the artist’s studio, in the vicinity of the Olympic Dam. The abstracted design of the composition pays homage to the Indigenous heritage of the area.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014.

#82 Rachel YOUNG, Cattleyard Reflections, enamel on copper, 30 x 30 cm,
$ 350

This work has been selected by the gallery as it is a wonderful showcase for Rachel Young’s expertise with enamelling and colour, as well as a typical example of Rachel’s continuing artistic theme of her observations when travelling around the regions of her home in Roxby Downs S.A.

This beautiful little picture has an interesting mix of mottled pinks, brown and blue with the ‘essence’ of a farm shed which is quintessentially Australian and a delight to observe.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014

#29. Sally DARLISON - Roma, maps, photos, hand dyed silk, machine embroidery, pens, maps, frame size: 101 x 44 cm, $ 1,100

Sally Darlison’s Roma is a fantastic work capturing the icons and essence of Rome, assembled in her typical quirky style which comes together as an intriguing and vibrant whole.

Darlison has an amazing talent for combining all of the essential elements which make Rome and the Italian ‘feel’ immediately obvious, and the work is a fascinating mix of photos, maps, hand dyed silk, machine embroidery, painting and printing.

While many of Darlison’s works employ rich, bright colours, this work is slightly more subdued to reflect the colours of the Italian architecture and landscape. However ‘Roma’ is a vibrant celebration of that city and its environs, and totally fascinating to view.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014

Sally DARLISON and Rachel YOUNG - "Not All Who Wander Are Lost”: Exhibition Highlight of the Week

This weeks Exhibition Highlights of the week is by Penny Rushton, Interior Designer for Quadrant Design Architects.

22. Sally DARLISON - Firenze, hand dyed silk, photos maps, machine stitch, frame size: 52 x 52 cm, $ 735

Penny says: Firenze is such a beautiful piece. A collage detailing significant areas of the landscape, with obvious landmarks nestled among natural scenes of rolling hills. A flowing river carries the eye across the work, and spills over the traditional square proportions of an artwork. The nature of silk gives an ephemeral quality to the work, as it appears to hover slightly and thereby casting soft shadows across the board to which it is mounted.

Sally’s layering technique adds dimension and intrigue. Only as one stands before this work can they can fully appreciate the level of detail that is revealed in the tiny stitches illustrating surface patterns, and the photo and map snippets that give further reference to the origin of inspiration.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014

101. Rachel YOUNG, Poached Egg Daisies, stick pins, 9 carat yellow gold & sterling silver, 7 x 2.5 cm, $ 175

These pins are a depiction of the actual ‘Poached Egg Daisy’ that flowers in the spring after good autumn rains and a dry summer, in Rachel’s home town in South Australia. Rachel’s work is evidently inspired by the things she sees in her Australian travels, but I love this piece (pins sold separately) for its delicacy and perfection,-the irregularities of each- as each flower might differ slightly from the next.

The material successfully transforms a common daisy into a delicate piece of jewellery, sculpted from Sterling Silver and 9 carat yellow gold.

I can just imagine how a small cluster of 2-3 of these pins worn on the breast of a soft cardigan or coat would catch the light and bring life to any outfit, but I love them so much I would admire them equally if they were out on display in my home.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 31 May 2014

No 32. Eva MILLER, Configuration - Lakeside Tryst, acrylic on paper, framed, 76 x 92 cm, $ 650

This weeks Exhibition Highlight of the week is by Imke Beutmann, Architect for Quadrant Design Architects.

The painting is composed of three different layers consisting of homogenously coloured organic shapes with sharp outlines in the foreground, a midsection of geometric, architectural shapes with softer coloured outlines and the sky in the background painted in rough and sketchy strokes. These layers create a perception of depth almost like a sfumato.

The couple of human forms in the foreground which the title suggests are having a rendezvous, are on opposite sides of the painting, but are visually connected by the bridge in the background that spans over them. The composition makes the viewer wonder what the man’s and the woman’s story might be.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 3 May 2014

46. Jane WILSON, In the Moment - First Time Modelling 2, water soluble oils on canvas, 61 x 92 cm, $ 1,500

This weeks Exhibition Highlight of the week is by Penny Rushton, Interior Designer for Quadrant Design Architects.

Jane Wilson's incredible skill for catching the raw emotion of a moment is what makes this my favourite of Jane's works.

A girl's innocent pose, covering her naked body and possessing a certain pride with her elongated neck and watchful eye; seems peaceful as a first time model.

This work emits a soft fleshy glow of warmth and light, that disguises the extraordinary detail from a distance. Brush strokes in varying directions and the textured hair give an almost rustic feel to the work.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 3 May 2014

Picture
No. 14 ‘In the Pilbara’ by Mary Raphael, acrylic on canvas, W60cm x H60cm $500

This week’s work of the week has been selected by Pam Jackson.
Pam writes: While essentially an abstract work, this painting evokes the vast expanse of the desert and the strong colours of the Pilbara.

The textural layering of colour immediately refers to the textures of the landscape and the strong colour contrasts of rock, bush and water.

I like the way that Mary Raphael’s work is realistic whilst still maintaining strong abstract qualities.

The exhibition is current until Saturday 3 May 2014
