This week’s work of the week is Warren Nichols ‘Western Port #1401’
oil and marble dust on canvas. H91 c w91cm   $1350

This strong yellow painting is indicative of Nichols’ inclination towards abstract art. In this work he has applied several layers of colour over his usual base of marble dust to create the initial texture and ‘flow’ of the sea, as observed across Western Port Bay.
Once several colour layers have been built up to produce the final top colour, the work is then rubbed back to reveal the underlying layers of colour.
The final result is a work that is striking, abstract, and yet evocative of a hot summer sunset. The painting can be viewed from two perspectives, as an abstract work or as a seascape; both options show the artist’s intent.

Warren Nichols ‘Western Port’ exhibition will be closing this Saturday 30 April at 4.00pm – worth a look before it closes!

This week we have selected work No.11 ‘Western Port #1501’
oil and pumice dust on canvas h91cm x w198cm $2850 from our current exhibition - Warren Nichols ‘Western Port’

This triptych is a lovely example of how the artist has been exploring the various moods of Western Port Bay at different times of day and night. The three canvases that form this work each started with the same base of pumice dust mixed with the initial layers of base paint to create the ‘flowing’ under texture of the work which continues across the canvases to create one work.
Each canvas then focuses on the same ocean at different times of the day and night.
The end result is a story of the moods of the sea. The work initially looks like a colour block study of variations of grey, but on closer inspection, the texture and movement underlying the surface come to the fore and one can then let the imagination discover the work on a more emotional level and to connect with the artist’s intent.

Warren Nichols ‘Western Port’ will be on display at the gallery until Saturday 30 April

Warren Nichols
Work #6 ‘Western Port #1406’
Oil and marble dust and wax on canvas  H107cm x w107cm    $1850.00

This painting embodies what Warren Nichols is aiming to achieve with this body of work. There is a strong, deep build-up of colour which is achieved by applying layer upon layer of different coloured glazes over a carefully placed ground of marble dust and wax. Once Nichols has achieved the desired finished colour, he then rubs back the surface to reveal glimpses of the texture below.

The finished work achieves the artist’s aim of conveying one of the many moods of Western Port Bay, while still maintaining an essentially abstract genre.
‘Western Port #1406’ looks at the inky depths of the water at night, with just glimpses of light flashing across the surface. It is easy to get ‘lost’ in this work, with more to see with each viewing.

Warren Nichols will be in the gallery this Saturday afternoon 16th April, from 2.30 – 4.00pm to discuss his works – all welcome.

Warren Nichols ‘Western Port’ will be exhibited in our gallery until Saturday 30 April
