#36 Laurie Smith, 'In Absence', ink, 24 ct Gold leaf on watercolour paper, 42 x 30 cm, $120
The first thing that caught my eye about this work was the format. There is something alluring about the composition - a dark square bordered by white that is boldly positioned off centre.
The eye is drawn upward, from the blank white and across the vastness of the ocean, dancing across the moonlight reflected on its surface, and finally up into the dark, hazy night sky.
The layers of squiggly line work encourage this rhythmic movement across the work, revealing detail in each and every layer.
The exhibition is current until Saturday, February 28.
