oil and marble dust on canvas. H91 c w91cm $1350
This strong yellow painting is indicative of Nichols’ inclination towards abstract art. In this work he has applied several layers of colour over his usual base of marble dust to create the initial texture and ‘flow’ of the sea, as observed across Western Port Bay.
Once several colour layers have been built up to produce the final top colour, the work is then rubbed back to reveal the underlying layers of colour.
The final result is a work that is striking, abstract, and yet evocative of a hot summer sunset. The painting can be viewed from two perspectives, as an abstract work or as a seascape; both options show the artist’s intent.
Warren Nichols ‘Western Port’ exhibition will be closing this Saturday 30 April at 4.00pm – worth a look before it closes!
