Penny COWIE

Many years ago I fell in love with the transparent, subtle yet complex blend of colour that was watercolour painting. I’m still painting and chasing that ideal and when I get close it makes up for the times when this most difficult medium will not do as I want but follows its own way.

It’s an eternal learning experience.

It was exciting to be in France painting in beautiful locations around Paris, Honfleur in Normandy, and to paint in Monet’s garden in Giverny.

In this exhibition, I have tried to recreate the varied light along the Seine and the Parisienne parks and streets, contrasting this with the countryside of Giverny and the seascapes of Honfleur Harbour.

As an artist the best way to remember your holiday overseas is to paint, sketch, and document your travels in a visual diary. Contemplating the colours, textures, shapes, landscapes and buildings, ensures that you will remember vividly your surrounds. Then add to the mix doing it with like-minded artists and you have a great combination.

France in September 2016 offered all of this, resulting in a folio of finished and unfinished artworks. I have used a combination of watercolour, gouache, and acrylic to translate these experiences into the art that is presented in this exhibition. Some of the art was completed overseas and for some I have used my visual diary and photos to help complete the paintings. A lot of these works are small which is a reflection of travelling light, moving and trying to capture the moment quickly.

Immerse yourself into all the aspects of France, both city and countryside and join me in the journey.

We have been taking these painting trips to France for 5 years, with painting Paris and the French country landscape always finding it challenging and wonderful.

I find the light so much softer in Normandy than I do in Provence. The challenge for me is to achieve the spontaneous brush strokes in the landscape and colour of the region .
