The Illumin8 Photographic Group comprises of 8 like-minded individuals, who share a common interest in photographing the beauty and fascinating aspects of the natural and man-made world around us. We are drawn to trying to interpret what we see, into a two-dimensional photographic image, so that we, and others, can view that magical moment in time in a more permanent representational image. Although our group has this fundamental interest in photography, at the same time we do have a diverse range of subject matter that we each focus upon.

Landscape photography is the most common link we all share, but within that genre we all have our differing preferences. These include astrophotography, sunrise/sunsets, rivers and seascapes, mountains, trees, and cityscapes. Also, Rob Turney concentrates on Refractographs, which is a form of photography that utilizes refraction of light, yet without a lens on the camera. For several members of our group, wildlife photography also features highly in their photographic adventures, which has led to roaming far and wide across the globe in search of interesting fauna to photograph.

We hope you enjoy this, our first exhibition, and that you find images that impact upon you in some way.

The varied fields of wildlife photography, Nature photography and Landscape photography are my passions in life. Whilst I have experienced in all fields of photography, it is the beauty and colours of the world, in its natural state that I find can only be properly captured via the photographic medium,to express that beauty and natural ambiance in such a way that will last forever. My interest in photography stems from the early days of the Box Brownie through to the later high quality cameras (my favourite back in my earlier years being the Pentax 35mm SLR, film) and whilst in New Guinea the 6X6 or 2 2/4” square film format as it was called. I moved into digital photography at the outset of the digital movement, again in the 35mm format and then the 645 medium format, thus giving me many years of experience in this latest medium of photography. I’m active in several photographic clubs and have been involved with such organisations for several years, plus, now having formed my own photographic group (“illumin8”) a group of dedicated, passionate, committed photographers striving for excellence in the art of photography. I have travelled the world and been on many tours to many countries, Australia, Papua New Guinea and near by islands; Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Scotland and its’ islands; Canada the USA (Yellowstone etc) including Alaska, Norway, the UK and Europe. This world of ours is a wonderful place one that I hope will remain as enticing and as beautiful for generations to come, so that they to can experience the pleasures and serenity that can often be found in the remotness of places as I have found.

As a teenager, holidays and photography were a natural fit. My first cameras were the ultra-simplistic Kodak Instamatics. You could even set the aperture to reflect whether the sky was cloudy or sunny. My first adventures with SLR cameras came when I was 17 and about to head to New Zealand for a holiday to celebrate the end of High School. A friend of my parents was travelling to Hong Kong and that was the opportunity to not only buy an SLR (a Minolta SRT-101), but also 2 additional lenses. Without knowing where I was heading in photography I wanted a 28mm wide angle lens. Are you sure, nobody shoots wider than 35mm! Yes I was sure and that is what I received, together with a 90-230mm telephoto zoom. Wide and long.
Like most enthusiasts, my interest in photography waned while I built a career and paid off a house, but while travelling, there was always a camera of some sort in the luggage.
With my photography mojo reinvigorated by the mid 1990’s, I entered the Canon EOS stream with a film camera, the 1000F. Again, additional wide angle and telephoto lenses but it was still film. My first foray into digital came in 2005 with a Canon 20D which had a whopping 8Mp sensor and a 1” preview screen on the back. But by teaching myself Photoshop and using a photo printer, I was now in control of the whole process from capture to print.
I still shoot Canon (5DMkIV’s) but I also love the quality of my Phase One medium format digital camera for landscapes. I choose the camera to suit the job. For the wildlife in Botswana and some of the Kimberley aerials, it was Canon. The rest were Phase One.
My bucket list of places to go for photography is long and I shall continue my search to photograph the beauty of the natural world whilst ever I an able.

Along with travel, photography is my main passion in life. Fortunately the two interests go together extremely well indeed. I feel photography has enabled me to expand my appreciation of nature, to see the true beauty of it all, and not just look at it. I strongly believe no one can produce consistently impacting images of nature until they learn to really “see”. We all see and interpret things differently of course, and very much according to one’s preferences, lifetime history and experiences.

My main subject matter preferences are of the natural world, such as wildlife and landscapes.  Along with my wife Sonja, we have had the good fortune of being able to travel and see many, many stunningly beautiful sights, and I have done my best to capture them in a way that conveys the impact these sights had upon me, and hopefully this impact carries through to others who view my images.

My work takes me to many heavy industrial sites situated around Melbourne. Many of these sites have the typical, noise, dirt, fumes and odours associated with industry, so when the opportunity arises, I am happy to escape to the bush or coast.

I am a morning person and with that I enjoy being “somewhere special” to experience the serenity and beauty of nature as it awakens.

Pre-dawn is the best part of any day and if mother nature decides to put on a colourful spectacular display, that is a bonus.

This exhibition includes some of my landscape images along with other interesting images of Nature/Wildlife.
I hope that you enjoy this selection of my images.
